English lvl 3 units

Post by Devira »

Hi I've just submitted my first ILP for the access to nursing. I have GCSE English and Maths but they're over ten years old. I have scoured the website, handbook, ILP and forums for information on what units I should take but they give conflicting information. It seems there have been some rule changes recently.

I hope to hear from my tutor soon, but meanwhile wonder if anyone can clarify the situation for me.

Is it the case that I only need to do 3 credits each of the level 2 eng and maths (instead of 6 credits each), and can then do the level 3 english units (two lots of 3 credits) instead of the remaining 3 credits each of the remaining level 2 eng and maths units?

Sorry if this is as clear as mud.. I'm wading through it myself lol!

Hi Christine

Because your GCSEs are over 10 years old, you will do refreshers in English and Maths level 2. That means that you will have 6 credits from your GCSEs exempted, and will do:

* English using writing for meaning - this is an essay that will help you with your future, graded level 3 essays. It's not English like you would have done in your GCSEs, but is there so that you can have a go at writing an essay without it impacting on grading
* Maths application of number - this is a refresher of maths, which to be fair, most of us blank out as soon as our exams have finished. You'll need to be up to speed on this for your level 3 Research Methods, and if you have a maths competency test at university interview

English level 3 (essay / report writing) can also be done if you want to, but they must be on top of your 45 level 3 credits
An example of this would be:
6 credits exemption for GCSEs
6 credits refreshers in English and Maths
45 credits specialist level 3 units
3 credits English l3 essay OR report writing - your tutor will use a level 3 essay or report you write during the course, and double mark it in line with the English l3 criteria. It doesn't involve anymore work, but the original assessment must be graded at Distinction in order to qualify for English l3 criteria
= 60 credits. If you don't have an essay or report that meets the above criteria, you would do IT l2 instead to give you 60 credits for the Diploma (again, an easy assessment that uses previous work)

Does this help?

I'm not sure where the info is conflicting - it would be really helpful if you could point me in the direction of where this is please.

Hi thanks for this answer, my tutor has also now been in touch.

I think the start of my confusion was this link:
http://www.distancelearningcentre.com/a ... odules.pdf

It's under your 'policies' menu on the main website. It seems to suggest that with GCSEs over ten years old you have to still do all the lvl 2 modules. I'm sure there was another page that confused me further but I can't find it now sorry!
