Have you researched the dust bowl? This is what was going on in the US, and where Steinbeck based OMAM, during the time the novel is set. If he'd have included this, how would it have changed the concept of the American Dream that he tried to project? Think about how he refers to the land - this obviously isn't what was really going on during the crisis...
